Floyd Dorsey's 95-yard fumble return for a score was a school record and tied for the 14th-longest fumble return in NCAA history.

Tulane Head Coach Chris Scelfo
In his fourth full season as the Tulane head coach, Chris Scelfo owns a career record of 15-22. A 1985 graduate of Northeast Louisiana University (now Louisiana-Monroe), Scelfo began his coaching career at his alma mater and made coaching stops at Oklahoma (1986-87), Marshall (1990-95) and Georgia (1996-98). He coached four teams that played in a I-AA national championship game, two of which won championships. A native of New Iberia, La., Scelfo took sole possession of 12th place in coaching wins at Tulane with the victory over Houston, ahead of former coaches Greg Davis, Mack Brown and Buddy Teevens.
Noting The Green Wave
One Down, Two to Go
...on the Green Wave's current stretch of three straight conference road games, that is. Tulane heads to Greenville, N.C. -- it's longest road trip of the season -- for a Saturday night meeting with East Carolina in the Pirates' 2002 home opener.
Recently
Tulane won its road and Conference USA opener last week by a 34-13 score over homestanding Houston. The Green Wave took advantage of seven Cougar turnovers and scored on both a fumble return and a kickoff return as the defense carried the day for the Wave. Mewelde Moore ran for 90 yards and J.P. Losman threw touchdown tosses of 37 and 28 yards, but it was the Green Wave "D" which held Houston to just one touchdown and two field goals on six trips inside the red zone.
2-0
Tulane is 2-0 in a season for the first time since 1998, but more incredibly, for just the second time since 1975 -- a stretch of 27 years. That '75 team defeated Clemson and Ole Miss in the first two weeks of the year before falling to Syracuse in week three. The '98 squad defeated Cincinnati and SMU on the start of its undefeated string.
Three Times
Tulane makes its third trip to Greenville in the last four years and is looking for its first win in the Pirates' den in its fourth trip to the North Carolina town. Tulane and ECU did not play in the Green Wave's perfect season of 1998, but TU visited Greenville in both 1999 and 2000 before ECU made a return trip to New Orleans last year. The two teams first met in 1991 in Greenville.
When Last We Met
Last year in the Superdome, Tulane gamely battled the Pirates for three quarters before succumbing 51-24. The Green Wave fell behind early, 17-0, but mounted a comeback and closed the gap to 23-17 in the third quarter after a six-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Ramsey to Roydell Williams. A 54-yard flanker pass from Richard Alston to Arnie Powell and a 92-yard run by Leonard Henry spelled doom for the Wave in its home opener. Williams finished the game with a career-high 154 receiving yards on 13 catches.
In Conference
Tulane is 18-20 all-time in Conference USA play. The league moved to an eight-game schedule in 2002 after playing seven games for the last two seasons. In 1996, teams played five league games and the number stood at six from 1997-99. Currently at 10 schools, C-USA will add its 11th football member in 2003 when South Florida becomes a league football school.
Tulane vs. C-USA
Tulane is 42-58-2 all-time versus teams that currently comprise Conference USA. The all-time series records, both as C-USA members and overall.
Unique Accomplishment
It's going to take more research back into the record books, but Tulane's Lynaris Elpheage no doubt moved into some elite company Saturday when he scored his fourth career touchdown in a fourth way. Elpheage returned Houston's on-side kickoff attempt 42 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to add a kickoff return TD to his punt return, interception return and fumble return scores. Last year, he recorded touchdowns on a 64-yard punt return versus Southern and on a 48-yard interception return against Navy. As a freshman, Elpheage scored on a 23-yard fumble recovery and return in the Navy game. Saturday's effort was Tulane's first kickoff return TD in 53 games, since Adam Moorhead brought a kick back 67 yards versus Louisville on October 11, 1997.
Another Level
In his junior season, cornerback Lynaris Elpheage has raised his play to another level with four interceptions in the first two games of the year to lead the nation with an average of 2.0 pickoffs per game. Elpheage, who led Tulane in INTs in each of the last two years with three, surpassed that total in just two games while climbing into a tie for fifth on the TU career interceptions list with 10.
Moore Climbing
Tulane running back Mewelde Moore is taking aim at the Tulane career records for rushing and all-purpose yards. With 90 rushing and 133 all-purpose yards last week, Moore passed Bill Banker to move into second place, behind only record-holder Eddie Price (1946-49) on the career rushing chart. Moore has 2,548 career rushing yards while Banker had 2,516 from 1927-29. Price collected 3,095 yards during his TU career. Moore, who already owns or shares 13 Tulane rushing and all-purpose records, moved up to third place on the career all-purpose yardage chart with 3,846 yards, trailing only return experts Jeff Liggon (4,110) and Michael Pierce (4,627) in that category.
Moore in '01
Moore is coming off one of the best offensive seasons in Green Wave history as he broke the Tulane and Conference USA records for rushing yards with 1,421, and for all-purpose yards with 2,259. In fact, Moore's 2,259 all-purpose yards, which consisted of his rushing, receiving (756) and return (82) yards, were the 23rd-highest single season total in NCAA history as he ranked third in the nation in all-purpose yards. Moore became the first player in NCAA Division I-A history to rush for more than 1,250 yards and to catch more than 60 passes in a single season. He led Tulane in catches in addition to his rushing prowess.
MeweldeMoore.net
The latest information on Tulane running back Mewelde Moore, a candidate for All-America honors who has already been named to the Watch List for the 2002 Doak Walker Award, is available on a special promotional website at www.MeweldeMoore.net. The site features Moore's latest statistics and a statistical review of his career, links to stories and news releases on the Baton Rouge running back, and his current standings in the Tulane record book, among other features.
Conference Mark
Tulane kicker Seth Marler, the 2001 Lou Groza Award winner and Tulane's first first-team All-American since 1987, took sole possession of the Conference USA record for field goals with a pair of threes at Houston to up his career total to 51. Marler, who had set the Tulane career record and tied the C-USA mark for field goals by making three in the season opener with Southern, separated himself from the rest of the league's kickers with 24- and 44-yard kicks in Houston. Last year, Marler became Tulane's first first-team All-American since 1987 when he was tabbed to the Football Writer's squad. He is working with a new holder, Chino Fontenette, and a new deep snapper, walk-on Lane Macaluso, in 2002.
Multi-Dimensional
In addition to his field goal and PAT kicking prowess, Seth Marler has used a stronger leg in 2002 to boom 12 of his 15 kickoffs into the endzone, enabling the Green Wave to keep its opponent from starting in good field position. Marler also assumed the starting punter role this season and ran into his first difficulties of the year in that role when he failed to get a fourth-quarter punt off and fell on the ball for a 10-yard loss. Overall, Marler has punted eight times for a 36-yard average.
Defensive Milestones
Tulane's defense has forced 10 turnovers through the first two games of 2002, a number it did not reach until the sixth game of the 2001 season. Defensive players scored four touchdowns for the Green Wave in 2001; they have scored three of Tulane's eight TDs through the first two games of this season. Houston's 13 points marked the lowest total for a Conference USA opponent in 24 games, since the 1998 team limited Southern Miss to seven points on October 3rd.
Spreading It Around
Eight different players have scored touchdowns for Tulane this year, including defensive players Lynaris Elpheage (42-yard onside kickoff return), Sean Lucas (76-yard fumble return) and Floyd Dorsey (95-yard fumble return). Four different players have caught touchdown passes -- including the first career TDs for receivers Chris Bush and James Dunn -- and old reliables Mewelde Moore and Roydell Williams. QB J.P. Losman has scored the Green Wave's only rushing TD of the season.
Long Run
Floyd Dorsey's 95-yard fumble recovery and return was one of the 13 longest touchdown plays in Tulane history, and the longest fumble return in school history. It was the longest touchdown play for the Green Wave since 1996, when Jeff Liggon recorded a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown versus Southern Miss. Dorsey's fumble recovery and TD was TU's second of the season and just the 11th in school history. It tied for the 14th longest fumble return in NCAA history (since 1992).
Little Bro'
Yes, that's Joey Dawson, younger brother of Tulane great and current NFL'er JaJuan, who has started the last two games at free safety for the Wave. Dawson has made quite an impact with 15 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery in his first two games. Dawson, who had been on academic scholarship at Tulane, walked on to the team last spring and was awarded a scholarship following two-a-days.
Record Breakers
Three Tulane players set or tied Green Wave career records during the win over Southern. Defensive end Kenan Blackmon became the school's career sack leader with his takedown of SU quarterback Quincy Richard in the fourth quarter. Blackmon now has 16.5 career sacks as he moved ahead of Mark Olivari. Kicker Seth Marler hit three field goals versus Southern to surpass Brad Palazzo for the Green Wave career record for threes with 49, and Mewelde Moore, earned his 13th career 100-yard rushing day to tie Eddie Price atop the TU lists.
Offensive Output
The Tulane offense has become a juggernaut under Chris Scelfo, achieving unprecedented levels of success matched by very few teams across the nation. In fact, Tulane is one of only two Division I-A teams in the nation (along with Louisiana Tech) that has ranked in the Top 12 in passing offense AND in the top 30 in total offense over each of the last three seasons. In the last three years, Tulane has been 12th (2001), third (2000) and fifth (1999) in passing offense, and has been 28th, seventh and 18th in total offense for those same years.
Big Shoes
California native J.P. Losman takes over as the Green Wave's starting quarterback in 2002, following in the footsteps of current NFL'ers Patrick Ramsey and Shaun King. King set nearly every Tulane passing and total offense record from 1995-98, but his marks were eclipsed by Ramsey, a first-round draft choice of the Washington Redskins last year. Losman already has a start on the record books, though. The junior started one game in each of the last two seasons. His 384 passing yards versus Army last season rank eighth on the single-game passing chart. He passed for 299 yards at East Carolina two seasons ago in his other start. Losman has thrown four TD passes and scored one rushing touchdown in his first two games while ranking 22nd in the country in passing efficiencey.
It Really Was A Zoo
Tulane senior Roxie Shelvin spent the summer as an intern at the Audubon Zoo, where he worked on several events and projects and earned credit toward his degree in media arts. Shelvin's favorite animal at the zoo was the gorilla.
Doubling (& Tripling) Up
Tulane's receivers have travelled in groups from their high schools into the Green Wave receiving corps. Two of the starting wide outs played together in high school in LaPlace as Roydell Williams and Chris Bush both played their prep ball at East St. John High School. However, the arrival of freshman Bubba Terranova means the Wave boasts three receivers among its top eight from Salmen High School in Slidell. Terranova joined Salmen products Nick Narcisse and Tristan Smith at Tulane.
Staff Switches
Defensive coordinator Eric Schumann made his Tulane coaching debut versus Southern after joining the Green Wave last January from SMU, where he spent the previous five seasons leading one of the top defenses in the Western Athletic Conference. Schumann's SMU defense was ranked No. 22 in the nation in total defense last year. One familiar face in a new position for the Green Wave is Brad Smiley, who spent the last two seasons on the staff as a graduate assistant before being elevated to tight ends coach.
Young at Heart
Despite returning 12 starters, including 10 seniors, on defense this year, the Green Wave features a young team overall with 39 freshmen and redshirt freshmen on the 86-man roster. Twelve of those rookies are listed on the two-deep, including true freshman Anthony Cannon at weak side linebacker. The majority of the freshmen, though, are on the offensive side of the depth chart, including a pair of redshirt freshmen starters on the left side of the offensive line -- tackle Chris McGee and guard Matt Traina.
New Starters
Nine players made their first career starts versus Southern, including five players on offense, three of whom were offensive linemen -- Matt Traina, Chris McGee and Jimmy Kosienski. Receivers James Dunn and Chris Bush join the group on offense as rookie starters. Defensively, senior Chris Washington, a converted linebacker, made his first career start as a defensive end while former walk-on Joey Dawson made an impact with the first sack of the 2002 season. Linebackers Blake Baker, Anthony Cannon and Nick Simpson have also made their debuts in the starting line-up over the last two games
Captain My Captain
Four players were elected the permanent team captains for 2002 by their teammates at the conclusion of preseason camp. A pair of juniors -- running back Mewelde Moore and quarterback J.P. Losman -- were tabbed as offensive captains, while defensively, senior tackle Roxie Shelvin and senior end Kenan Blackmon were the choices.
Preseason Honors
A trio of Tulane players received preseason All-Conference USA accolades as voted by league coaches. Kicker Seth Marler was named the favorite to take the Special Teams Player of the Year award again along with mention on the preseason all-conference team. He was joined by Mewelde Moore and receiver Roydell Williams on the preseason team.
Boyhood Dreams
One of J.P. Losman's favorite targets this year is also his boyhood friend, James Dunn. Dunn caught three passes for 57 yards and the Green Wave's first touchdown versus Southern and followed that with two catches for 25 yards in the Houston game. The two attended elementary school together in Venice, Calif. before they split up when Losman moved to Venice High School while Dunn remained at St. Monica.
Looking Ahead
Following the East Carolina game, Tulane will wind up its early season road trip with its third straight conference road game at Memphis before returning to New Orleans to face Texas in the Superdome. The only advantage of the early road slate is that the Green Wave will play five of its last six games in New Orleans.
